Hello,

My name is David Lewis, I'm an Assistant Fire Chief with the Newport News Fire Department. Thank you for talking about Mental health and burnout.

In 2012, 6 hours after holding my dead child in my hands, I locked all my emotions inside and went to work at the fire station. For years I was pretending that I was fine and hid my pain from the world. This lead to a myriad of mental health issues and I nearly lost my life.

For years I fought through my issues and finally climbed out of the darkness. I'm currently getting my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and will have a private practice aimed at helping first responders when I retire.
